What Is Physical Fitness?
As our understanding of what constitutes a healthy life style has evolved,
many definitions of fitness have been offered. Traditionally, a person was "Fit" simply if he/she was not sick. Some
people associate fitness with athletic prowess. Strength, speed, power, agility and coordination are components of fitness
for the athlete, but these attributes are not necessarily the keys to lifetime adult fitness.
Many years ago, a comprehensive study determind that there were certain behaviors
associated with favorable health status and are important in achieving "fitness".
These healthy habits still hold true today:
- not smoking
- avoiding excessive consumption of alcoholic beverages
- maintaining desirable weight
- sleeping 7-8 hours a night
- exercising
- eating a nutritious breakfast daily
- avoiding snacks
Why a Fitness Evaluation?
It is helpful and often beneficial to undergo a physician's exam on a routine
basis. However, these exams have traditionally been designed to assess the absence or presence of disease. The fitness
evaluation on the other hand, assesses the wellness of an individual and one's potential for fitness improvement.
Information gained from a fitness test can help in the design of an exercise
program which meets the goals consistent with optimal fitness.
